Success Stories

READ/San Diego learner Maria Arvizo wrote an essay after reading Dr. Martin Luther King's speech, "I Have a Dream". At her tutor's suggestion, she wrote an essay from her heart about her own dreams and goals, with an attempt to emulate the poetry of Dr. King's writing.  It will soon be appearing in the Literacy Tribune, as well as in READ/San Diego's section of the National Writing Gallery. We are pleased to be able to share Maria's essay with you, as follows:

 I Have a Dream

 by Maria Arvizo

I have a dream that one day I will speak, write, read and understand the English language very fluently. I have a dream one day I will have a better job and better opportunities in my life. I have a dream one day I will be extremely proud of myself to reach this dream. I have a dream it will be soon, because right now I'm working on my English Skills, and I began to see how my writing and reading flow between my tutor and me. Her name is Kelly. I have a dream that I will improve my English Skills a lot with her valuable help. She is such a nice and wonderful person and tutor. As I started a few weeks ago I have now learned a lot, I feel enthusiastic, motivated and optimistic to work on my English skills. I have a dream with this hope and faith, I will be able to work through struggle and stay optimistic. I have a dream one day I will demonstrate myself if I'm successful, courageous and optimistic I will be triumphant. I know it's harder when the language isn't your native language, but it's not impossible. I'm sure I'm going on the right road. I have a dream this determination and goals that I have can be a success. I have a dream held close to my heart and everything is possible. If I work hard enough any dreams can come true. I have a dream this will be the day, this will be the day!
