... you are far more fortunate than more than half a million adults in our community. We are asking you to help us help them. Illiteracy is a national problem. San Diego is not exempt.
There are more than 567,000 functionally illiterate adults living and working in our community. Thousands of adults have taken the first major step toward improving their basic skills in reading, writing, and math by enrolling in the READ/San Diego Adult Literacy Program, a free, confidential, learner centered program of the San Diego Public Library.
Each adult learner in the program is assigned an unpaid, volunteer tutor. These tutors, who come from all walks of life, share the common commitment to literacy for all. They are trained by READ/San Diego's professional staff and provided books and materials to assist the learners in achieving literacy skills.
